ARIZONA SOCIETY OF THE FOUNDATION FOR OSTEOPATHIC MEDICAL EDUCAITON (ASFOME)
The Arizona Society of the Foundation for Osteopathic Medical Education (ASFOME) was formed in 2009 by a group of practicing osteopathic family medicine physicians and educators to raise funds for Scholarships benefiting Osteopathic Medical Students studying Family Medicine and Osteopathic Family Medicine Residents in Arizona who are planning to stay and practice medicine in the state. Arizona has a shortage of family medicine doctors, particularly in rural areas where populations are underserved. With scholarship and educational opportunities available to those who plan on staying in Arizona to practice medicine, ASFOME believes this encouragement will contribute to better healthcare for rural patients whose access to medical care has been limited in the past.
The Foundation also plans to raise funds for Medical Missions Support, providing educational opportunities and funds for Osteopathic Family Medicine Students, Residents and Physicians to participate in Medical Missions around the world.
Understanding the importance of providing support for medical missions as a local and worldwide community service, and to provide additional learning opportunities for osteopathic medical students, funds will be raised to support various missions that become available. Each mission will be evaluated and funded where medical care is not available, or where a disaster that requires medical teams to assist in stabilizing a health crisis. Founders made the decision to work with medical mission organizations that already exist and have a history and structure for successful international missions. The scope of ASFOME participation is to fund individual student/doctor sponsorship for expenses to volunteer (i.e. food, lodging) and/or funding pharmaceuticals for use on the mission. Funding will come through ASFOME’s solicitation of potential sponsors, golf tournament fund raising events and donations.
All officers and board members are family physician volunteers, and part time administrative assistance will be provided by volunteers whose background is working with Non-Profit Organizations. To be eligible to serve on the Board, Volunteers shall be Licensed or Retired Osteopathic Physicians, educators, or individuals who support the objectives and purpose of the foundation.
The ASFOME is a 501(c)3 charitable organization. If you are interested in serving on the Board or a Committee please contact Virginia “Max” Maxwell at max.maxwell@cox.net or call 480.284-6434
